Fixing up house for wedding?
My boyfriend and I recently got engaged. His folks are both into real estate and have been holding onto his grandfather's home in Sterling, Illinois. His grandfather left the house to my fiancee in his will. It's one of those old Victorian houses and they want us to fix it up, so that we can have my bridal shower and the rehearsal dinner there. The house is literally 100 years old and it's not what I would want for any kind of wedding party. It's a very old-fashioned house. My bf has strongly expressed that this is very important to them. He literally grew up in the house and all he talks about is how they don't make homes like this anymore. He even said that we should move into it after it's fixed up. I'm a city girl and always imagined us living in downtown Chicago, in a chic condo. How can I explain to my in-laws and fiancee what I want without hurting their feelings?
I would imagine that it would be really important to cover this and many other areas before you get married. A lot of counselors and religious leaders can provide pre-marital counseling where this could be discussed and worked out along with other issues.
Often, compromises can be found. Perhaps the bridal shower can be held where you like but the rehearsal dinner or reception could be at the house. The trick is that both of you need to compromise.
To bring things up or to "fight fair" try to stick with your feelings as opposed to perspective. People tend to try to convince the other person that they are "right." No one is right or wrong - it's about taking each other's feelings into consideration.
