Letting the steering wheel slide? Hand Grip?
I am going to take the drivers test in Oregon next month.. I was advised by my drving instructor to grip the wheel at the "8 and 4" position and use shuffle steering. as opposed to "10 and 2" with hand over hand. Is this correct? Also, he said it was ok to let the wheel gently "slide" through the hands while loosely gripping it. Will I get points taken off on my drivers test for doing this?

Shuffle steering keeps the hands from being in front of the air bag. Steer hand over hand, and someone comes out of nowhere and you collide, the air bag can toss your hand into your face at 200mph. Hand over hand is the old way, just as hands at 10 and 2 is the old way. Actually, the new way is to hold the wheel at 9 and 3, but you won't be docked for 8 and 4 so long as it is comfortable for you.
As far as letting the wheel slide, that is allowing the natural tendency of a properly maintained vehicle to straighten out after a turn. It isn't always necessary to turn the car back, it depends on the speed and the sharpness of the turn.
But worn strut mounts will cause memory steering, in which case you can't let the wheel slide, you have to steer it back straight until such time as a repair is effected.
