Why is the inside of my Guinea Pigs' water bottle green?
I got him in October 2009 and recently His water bottle keeps going green inside. I change the water every day and wash it out so why is it going green?

It is one of 2 problems, both of which have the same solution. He is either getting food backed up in there which is making a bacterial slime or he is getting a few cells of algae up in there (it could be in his mouth from the feed or hay) and they are growing on the sides of the bottle. In either case, both the bottle and sipper tube need to be disinfected. The easiest way is to use household chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite, US brand name Clorox). Mix 1 part bleach and 9 parts warm water and soak the bottle and tube in it for a couple of hours - overnight is better. Scrub the bottle with a bottle brush and the sipper with a pipe cleaner. Rinse both until the bleach smell is gone. When you think it is rinsed enough, rinse a couple of times more! You may need to do this weekly.

I have been bleaching bottles every few weeks for 40 years with no problems. It is not hard to get rid of the bleach. As a vet, Samantha should know this. I am a PhD microbiologist and have sanitized many things at home that I and my animals have used for food and drink.
BTW, why is it that everyone here assumes that all the posters are women?
